United Methodist City Society

175th Anniversary

On November 3rd of this year, our Executive Director, Byrd Bonner, several board members and friends of the Foundation attended a gala in New York City celebrating the 175th Anniversary of the United Methodist City Society.  700 people were in attendance.  Hillary Rodman Clinton was the guest speaker.

“Founded in 1838, The United Methodist City Society transforms the lives of people in New York City by embodying the gospel of Jesus Christ. Caring for the poor, healing the sick, and welcoming children are at the core of our work. Our four program areas focus our ministry:
• Children’s Programs and Services
• Substance Addiction Programs and Outreach
• Support for New Ministries and Church Outreach
• Scholarships for Urban Ministry
The United Methodist City Society is a ministry of the New York Annual Conference.”

A children’s choir from First UMC in Flushing sang for the former first lady and the gathering.

It was a very diverse group of people in terms of age, language and culture, race, role in the church – six bishops and many ordained elders, deacons and lay people attended.
